M249 SAW

M249 SAW is a Primary Machine Gun weapon that can be purchased in Mexico. It can be sold to (but not purchased at) Big Al's Gun Shop.
The M249 SAW was one of the items available at the official launch of Torn on 15 November 2004, having been introduced during the Torn City Beta. [1]
The M249 SAW has a base fire rate between 15 to 25 rounds per turn and can fire 100 rounds (over four to seven turns) without reloading. It has a stealth rating of 2.0. The M249 SAW is the cheapest Machine Gun weapon in the game, and is also the most accurate Machine Gun after its accuracy buff in the Damage Revamp (2021) update.
Obtaining
The M249 SAW is most commonly obtained as a purchase from Mexico. It can also be found through city finds, received as a possible result from paying 75 job points to use the Private Security Firm 5* special, "Open Arsenal," [2] and purchased from the Mission reward shop for ~173 to 192 Mission reward credits. [3]
100 (?) M249 SAWs will be restocked in Mexico after being sold out. [4] The amount of time before a restock occurs is half the time it took the item to sell out, rounded to the nearest 15 minutes.
M249 SAWs can be bought from other players through the Item Market, Bazaars, or Trades, but as Primary weapons do not stack they must be purchased one by one, making it time consuming to buy in bulk.
A high quality M249 SAW with a Weapon Bonus can be obtained by opening a Heavy Arms Cache. An M249 SAW obtained this way can have a Damage stat up to 82 and an Accuracy stat up to 56.
Usage
The M249 SAW and Minigun are the only two Machine Gun weapons that can be purchased for less than a billion dollars. As a result, both are commonly utilized to get the 1,000 Machine Gun finishing hits for the War Machine honor.
M249 SAWs with Weapon Bonuses such as Puncture or Specialist are capable of extremely high damage outputs. They see occasional use in attacking, Faction Warfare, Ranked Wars, and NPC looting.
As the M249 SAW has a relatively low fire rate for a Machine Gun weapon, it is not usually used as a way to boost players' "rounds fired" statistic. Due to the low fire rate, an M249 with the maximum Conserve bonus and a recoil pad equipped by a player with all Mathematics Education completed could theoretically be used 25 times in a fight and only have to reload once.
Buffs
Players can gain Weapon Experience on M249 SAWs once the "CBT3870 Bachelor of Military Arts and Science" Education course has been completed. M249 SAWs and all primary and secondary weapons gain a 20% damage boost from the "Firearms Expert" 10* special and an extra clip from the "Bandolier" 7* special at Gun Shops.
M249 SAWs, along with all primary and secondary weapons, receive a 20% and 5% bonus to Ammo conservation from the "MTH3330 Bachelor of Mathematics" and "MTH2310 Discrete Mathematics" courses respectively. The "CBT2820 Study of Machine Guns" course gives +1 accuracy to all machine guns.
The M249 SAW is affected by all universal buffs such as the 1% damage boost from completion of the "BIO2350 Evolution" course or the +3 accuracy from the "Seasoned Poacher" 10* Zoo special.

Historical Notes
The M249 SAW was referred to as the "M249 PARA LMG" prior to the 2021 Damage Revamp update. It was renamed alongside the Type 98 Anti-Tank, and given a 10 point boost to accuracy. The M249 SAW was the only weapon to have its accuracy changed in the update.
The M249 SAW was the only Machine Gun in the game until the Snow Cannon's classification was changed from Heavy Artillery to Machine Gun in 2017. [5]
All M249 SAWs used to have the same damage and accuracy stats. Unique stats for each M249 SAW were revealed in a December 2015 update. [6]
In the old Ammo system prior to the Attacking 2.0 update, ammo for the M249 SAW costed $1,000 per clip. The icon for the ammo ( ) was a large rifle cartridge. [7]
Before the introduction of Travel, the M249 SAW was available for purchase at Big Al's Gun Shop. [8]
