Armor
Wearing Armor reduces the damage received from an opponent.
Very simply, armor rating represents the percentage of the damage reduction. For example, a 40.00 rated piece of armor reduces damage taken by 40%, so a 1000 damage hit actually only deals 600 damage.
The following equation can be used to determine the damage received while wearing armor:
D(A) = D(I) * (1-A/100)
where D(I) is the Initial damage dealt by an opponent, A is the armor rating of the piece being worn, and D(A) is the resultant damage received with this armor equipped.
With certain Companies this can become even more powerful. 10* clothing stores provide a 20% buff to armor (effectively turning a 40.00 piece into a 48.00 piece), and 7* Private Security Firms provide a 25% buff when wearing a full set (helmet, chest, gloves, pants, boots).

Coverage
Armor doesn't necessarily cover the entire area of the slot its equipped to. The mitigation provided is actually based on displayed pixel coverage - i.e. if it looks covered on the player model, then it's covered. If not, you won't get any protection there!
