Pets
Pets are a now defunct feature of Torn that was added very early in the game's run. The earliest known page mentioning pets is from December 2006, but it is possible they were added earlier. The ability to buy new pets was removed in June 2007, with pets being removed entirely by August 2007. [1]
Pets were purchased from the (also now defunct) Pet Store. The only pet added to Torn before the feature's removal was dogs. It is unknown if other pets were planned.
Dogs
Dogs were listed in a player's items list, but were not standard items, as there was never an item ID for dogs, much like early Christmas and Halloween candies. Unlike the candies, dogs could be sent to other players.
Dogs had to be taken care of daily, including being fed and played with. If a dog's needs were neglected, it could die. Once a dog was 30 days old, if it was in "healthy" status, it could be trained to fight. [2]
Feeding
Food had to be purchased for dogs. The feeding was instant, and food was also not considered an item.
The following food was available for dogs:
| Cache Pricing | ||
|---|---|---|
| Food | Cost | Hunger |
| Dog Biscuit | $3 | ~20-28 Hunger |
| Dog Treat | $5 | 21-31 Hunger |
| Bowl of dry dog food | $6 | 32-45 Hunger |
| Can of dog food | $8 | 46-67 Hunger |
| Steak | $15 | 68 Hunger |
| Water | Free (?) | Instant refill (For thirst?) |
Playing
There were three play options with a dog, necessary to keep it healthy. A player could play fetch with, wash, or walk the dog. Each play option costed five energy.
Training
Training would be unlocked for healthy dogs once they were old enough. Training a dog would make it stronger in a fight, much like a player and Battle Stats. Dogs could only be trained so many times in a set period until they tired. The following training options, listed in order of difficulty, were available for dogs:
- Toy Mouse
- Toy Cat
- Toy Dog
- Live Mouse
- Live Cat
- Live Dog
Breeding
Dogs could be bred with each other to give birth to other dogs that would go into a player's inventory. The dog would be a mix of the parents' breeds. Different breeds were more effective in dog fights.
The following breeds were known (There were likely others):
- Afghan Hound
- Bloodhound
- Border Collie
- Boxer
- Bulldog
- Collie
- Pitbull
- Rottweiler
Dog Fights
Dogs could be entered into fights against each other. Players could bet money on the winner. Unlike an Attack, The fights were automatic- winners were based on the health and breed of a dog, the amount of training it had done, and luck. The losing dog would die and be deleted from a player's inventory.

Trivia
The Dong Plushies from the Anniversary Present given to players for Torn's 15th-anniversary event are a reference to the removal of dogs. "Bring back dogs" was a common refrain in the forums by players unhappy with the change in the late 2000s. This saying was often parodied as "bring back dongs," with the Dong items being added as a satirical way to fulfill this tongue-in-cheek request.
